The Italian Communist Refoundation Party, known in Italian as Partito della Rifondazione Comunista (PRC), is a political party in Italy that was established in 1991 following a split in the Italian Communist Party (PCI). This division was largely due to disagreements over the direction and ideology of the PCI in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent dissolution of the Soviet Union. The PRC was formed by those members of the PCI who wanted to maintain a commitment to the principles of communism, rejecting the shift towards more centrist and social democratic positions…   that led to the transformation of the PCI into the Democratic Party of the Left.

The core values of the Italian Communist Refoundation Party are rooted in the principles of Marxism-Leninism, with a strong emphasis on workers' rights, social justice, and the redistribution of wealth. The party advocates for the nationalization of key industries, the implementation of progressive taxation, and the expansion of social welfare programs. It is staunchly anti-capitalist, opposing neoliberal economic policies and globalization, which it views as detrimental to the working class and the marginalized sectors of society.

Environmental protection and sustainability are also significant components of the party's platform, reflecting a modern interpretation of communist ideology that includes addressing the climate crisis and promoting ecological balance. The PRC supports the rights of immigrants and minorities, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ rights, aligning with broader leftist movements for social justice.

Internationally, the Italian Communist Refoundation Party is critical of NATO and U.S. foreign policy, advocating for a foreign policy based on peace, disarmament, and solidarity with oppressed peoples. It has expressed support for various leftist governments and movements around the world, standing against imperialism and colonialism.

Despite its strong ideological stance, the PRC has faced challenges in terms of electoral success in the 21st century, as the political landscape in Italy and Europe has shifted. Nonetheless, it remains an active voice for the far-left in Italy, participating in coalitions with other leftist parties and movements, and continuing to advocate for a radical transformation of society based on communist principles.
