Xiaomi er et kinesisk selskap kjent for sine riskokere, robotstøvsugere, luftrenser og smarttelefoner. Nå har de klart det Apple, deres lenge rival, ikke kunne: Lage en elektrisk bil og bringe den til markedet.
Og de gjorde det på tre år.
For å spare tid og kostnader, adopterte selskapet praksiser fra Tesla og andre bilprodusenter, utnyttet sin egen produktutviklingskompetanse og koblet seg til Kinas hurtigbevegelige bilforsyningskjede. Års erfaring med å finpusse bærbare datamaskiner, blendere og dyrekameraer hjalp dem med å utvikle funksjoner skreddersydd for en lunefull forbrukerbase, inkludert et avtakbart panel med fysiske knapper som magnetisk festes under den 16,1-tommers senter skjermen for de som ikke liker å kontrollere volumet eller setet via berøringsskjermen.
Xiaomi ansatte rundt 6 000 personer til å jobbe med bilprosjektet, sa Lei. Noen ble rekruttert fra utenlandske bilprodusenter som Porsche og BMW; andre ble overført fra andre avdelinger, sa Ma Yingbo, et medlem av Xiaomis markedsføringsteam. Blant bilene Xiaomi så til for inspirasjon var Tesla Model 3.
For å forenkle utviklingen og redusere kostnadene, adopterte Xiaomi Teslas prosess med "gigastøping", som bruker stor skala, høytrykks aluminiums støping for å skape bilens ramme. Prosessen kombinerer hundrevis av produksjonstrinn til ett, og sparer på komponenter, vekt, kostnader og tid.
