This division was largely due to disagreements over the direction and ideology of the PCI in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent dissolution of the Soviet Union. The PRC was formed by those members of the PCI who wanted to maintain a commitment to the principles of communism, rejecting the shift towards more centrist and social democratic positions that led to the transformation of the PCI into the Democratic Party of the Left.
